Voice Circle: A Look at Ethnicity in the Workplace- How Do We Break Down the Barriers to Success?

16 October 2019 @ 12:30 - 14:00

Background
Researchers at the University of Manchester (partnering with the Centre on Dynamics of Ethnicity) established that, while children from a number of ethnic minority backgrounds tend to outperform white children at GSCEs, these gains have not translated into improved employment outcomes. This is also borne out in the workplace. Looking at this from a gender split perspective, it becomes apparent that, over the years, many ethnic minority men have benefited more from upward occupational mobility than women. We would like to explore the rationale for this.

Discussion
Many employers acknowledge that there is an attainment gap in the workplace: people of BAME background have routinely lower performance markings than the their white counterparts. What are the reasons for this and what can be done to change it? Can some of the interventions that are more commonplace in addressing gender diversity at work help address this issue and other types of diversity challenges?
